Mental Health Services
Occasionally you may encounter situations in your life that affect your learning environment. When these situations arise, counseling is available to provide short-term assistance, and in some cases, referral to community resources for long-term help.
Meeting individually with a licensed professional counselor in a private setting can help you to clarify thoughts and feelings, develop problem-solving skills and coping strategies, and to construct a plan for the future.
The Student Health Clinic provides free counseling services with a licensed mental health practitioner.
Our counselor is available to help you with:
- stress management
- personal/social problems
- family problems
- eating disorders
- concerns with domestic violence or abuse
- sexual harassment or rape
- post traumatic stress disorder
- substance abuse counseling with referral available.
Online Mental Health Screening
FREE and ANONYMOUS online mental health screenings are available 24 hours per day. Take a questionnaire to see if you may have symptoms of:
- an eating disorder
- bipolar disorder
- alcohol abuse
- post-traumatic stress

Mental Health Counselor
Caitlin Pixler, MS, LMFT, is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, employed with UnityPoint Health Black Hawk-Grundy Mental Health Center (BHGMHC). She received her BA from UNI in Family Services with minors in Psychology, Women and Gender Studies, and Gerontology. She received her MS from Kansas State University (KSU) in Marriage and Family Therapy with a certificate in Conflict Resolution.
Following her graduation, Caitlin worked at Monarch Therapy Services Inc providing both individual and family therapy services to clients in northeast Iowa. She was also employed at the UNI Counseling Center providing therapy services to students. She has been employed at the Mental Health Center for the past two years providing mental health therapy to students in the Waterloo Community School District.
In her role at Hawkeye Community College, Caitlin will be providing a wide range of mental health services including evaluations, screenings, individual therapy, couples counseling, education, information and referral services. She will also be involved in providing mental health education and consultation to Hawkeye students.
