Iowa Grant

The Iowa Grant Program is a statewide need-based program to assist high-need Iowa residents.

In the event that available state funds are insufficient to pay the full amount of each approved grant, the Iowa College Student Aid Commission has the authority to administratively reduce the award.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Resident of the State of Iowa

  • United State citizen or national, or U.S. permanent resident or other eligible noncitizens (as stipulated for Federal Student Aid eligibility).

  • Enrolled in at least 3 credit hours in an undergraduate degree or certificate program.

Eligibility for Priority Funding

Priority funding is reserved for:

  • Iowa residents under the age of 26.

  • Iowa resident under the age of 30 if the student is a veteran and is eligible for benefits, or has exhausted benefits, under the federal Post-9/11 Veterans Educational Assistance Act of 2008.

  • students who are not convicted felons as defined in Iowa Code section 910.15.

And who also meet any of the following criteria:

  1. The student is the child of a peace officer, as defined in section 97A.1, who was killed in the line of duty as determined by the board of trustees of the Iowa department of public safety peace officers' retirement, accident, and disability system in accordance with section 97A.6, subsection 16.

  2. The student is the child of a police officer or a fire fighter, as defined in section 411.1, who was killed in the line of duty as determined by the statewide fire and police retirement system in accordance with section 411.6, subsection 15.

  3. The student is the child of a sheriff or deputy sheriff as defined in section 97B.49C, who was killed in the line of duty as determined by the Iowa public employees' retirement system in accordance with section 97B.52, subsection 2.

  4. The student is the child of a fire fighter included under section 97B.49B, who was killed in the line of duty as determined by the Iowa public employees’ retirement system in accordance with section 97B.52, subsection 2.
