> Admission into the Surgical Technology Prep Program
Admission into the Surgical Technology Prep Program
Applicants must provide the following before enrolling in Pre-Surgical Technology classes:
Documentation of Health Insurance Coverage
A completed health physical and current immunization record including verification of the hepatitis B vaccination or medical waiver (on file at the Kirkwood Health Office)
You are responsible for a yearly tuberculosis test.
A current CPR certification for the Health Care Professional. The following CPR certifications will be accepted:
American Health Association - "Healthcare Provider" (no other level accepted)
American Red Cross - "CPR for the Professional Rescuer" (no other level accepted)
EMP - "BLSPRO" (this course includes First Aid and Healthcare Provider CPR)
CPR Instructor Level for Red Cross, American Heart, or EMP
A copy of a high school diploma or GED certificate (on file with the program coordinator)
A current criminal record check (on file with Kirkwood Community College)

Complete a Hawkeye Community College application for admission
Applications can be submitted
online
or you can
print and mail
your application. Contact the Admissions Office at 800-670-4769, ext. 4000 or 319-296-4000 for an application to be mailed to you.
There is no application fee
Be sure to indicate your major on your application form.
Send transcripts to Kirkwood Community College AND Hawkeye Community College Admissions Offices
Official high school transcripts and/or GED scores.
Previous official college transcripts.
Send ACT scores or register for the COMPASS Assessment
The ACT is not required, but it is accepted for admissions.
If you choose not to take the ACT, you must take the COMPASS Assessment.
If you have taken the ACT, your score will appear on your high school transcripts.
English, reading, and math subscores will be evaluated. Each subscore must be 19 or above to be applicable. If any subscore is below 19, you must take the COMPASS Assessment in that area.
Students with prior college credit in math, reading, or English courses may be exempt from one or more assessment areas.

Applying for Financial Aid
Complete a
FAFSA
- Free Application for Federal Student Aid
Indicate Kirkwood Community College as the college on the FAFSA form.
Kirkwood's FAFSA college code is 004076.
It is recommended that a FAFSA should be completed by July 1.
Complete consortium paper work
Contact the Hawkeye Community College Financial Aid office at 319-296-4020 or 1-800-670-4769, ext. 4020 to fill out the proper consortium paper work.
