Veterans' Education Benefits Information

VA Education Benefits Eligibility

VA Education benefits are authorized to veterans and qualifying dependents. Each education benefit program is identified by a chapter designator. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs will determine your eligibility. You may access the VA Education benefit eligibility requirements on the GI Bill website.

VA education payment rates are determined for each Federal fiscal year. The rates can be found on the VA's GI Bill website.

Guidelines for Receiving VA Education Benefits

  1. The VA requires schools to evaluate and report transfer credit from all prior educational experiences. Therefore, official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions that you have attended are needed to process you enrollment certification.
  2. In order to remain eligible for VA benefits, you must maintain satisfactory progress.
  3. You will be certified for only those courses that apply toward your degree objective.
  4. You may not repeat courses that have been previously completed with a passing grade at Hawkeye Community College or at any other previously attended college and receive benefits for those courses.
  5. You must notify the Certifying Official at Hawkeye Community College if you alter your registration in any way. This includes dropping or adding a class, terminating school, changing programs or majors, or any other changes that might affect your payment status.
  6. You must notify the VA office at 1-888-442-4551 of any address change.

Verifying Your Enrollment Status

If you receive education benefits under Chapter 30 (GI Bill-Active Duty), Chapter 1606 (GI Bill-Selected Reserve), or Chapter 1607(REAP) you must verify your enrollment status to the VA each month to receive payment.

  • You may verify your enrollment through the GI Bill / WAVE website or by calling 1-877-823-2378
  • You will need your Social Security Number and your zip code.
  • Verification must be done on the last day of the month or after.
  • Please remember that you are verifying for the month that has just ended.
  • If you have Direct Deposit set up, your payment is generally in your account within 3-5 business days.
  • If you are receiving your payment by mail, it will take about 5-7 business days.
  • You will not be able to verify your enrollment by either method until the VA has completed processing your claim. Processing time is approximately 10-12 weeks.

Using Federal or State Tuition Assistance Programs

  • National Guard members will need to complete the National Guard Education Assistance Program Application online at www.iowanationalguard.com. You will complete the State application for Fall and Spring semesters and the Federal application for Summer semester. The Iowa College Student Aid Commission will notify the school of your eligibility for the State Tuition Assistance and the funds will be dispersed to the school to be applied to your tuition. The Federal application will be sent to your AKO account once approved. The school will be updated by the Commission.
  • Reservist will need to complete a DA Form 2171 for the Tuition Assistance Program. Contact your unit for assistance or go to www.military.com. Click onto Education and then select Tuition Assistance. Once your application is approved, you will receive copies of your approved form through your AKO account with instructions to bring one copy to the school. Please submit it to the VA Certifying Official at that time. The school will bill the appropriate offices for your approved tuition and fees.
