Demonstration gardens enhance learning
Natural Resources Management students have planned, planted and continue
to maintain several native plant demonstration gardens at Hawkeye
Community College in Waterloo. Natural resources instructor Terri Rogers
has received funding from the Living Roadway Trust Fund for a variety of
projects, including the demonstration gardens. These gardens help
students learn to identify native plants, and demonstrate the usefulness
of native vegetation in reducing runoff, improving water quality, and
providing wildlife habitat. Many HCC Natural Resources students seek
careers in Iowa's county IRVM program. Pictured is a garden near
the Hawkeye Center which beautifies a small drainage way.
