Handout  --

Incorporating Web-based Tools in the classroom

Micro-blogging tools – help you create content in very short chunks.

Tumblr – Lets you post links, text, quotes, video, and pictures.  You can follow other people’s pages, so there is an element of social networking. I am using Tumblr as a journaling tool for students in my Technology in the classroom course, and they seem to be enjoying it.

Twitter – This gives you a way to post very brief updates (one or two sentences) and reminds you of text messaging. You are limited to 140 characters for any one post. The writing prompt is: what are you doing right now? You can use your smart phone to post/read Twitter feeds. I am showing this to my students as an experiment, with some ideas for future applications. It’s fascinating to see people like Barak Obama using Twitter, as well as journalists using Twitter on their shows, and at the political conventions this summer.

Educational Technology Page on Google

http://cheriedargan.googlepages.com/home

Here is a new page where I will post thoughts on the use of technology in the classroom from time to time. (Googlepages is a new feature of Google email).

Google's page creator, which was used to create the googlepages mentioned above, has been replaced by a new, more powerful website builder called Sites. Here is my new sites project--on doing a WebQuest.

Textbook/Companion website

Here is the student side of the textbook’s companion website.  http://web.utk.edu/~bobannon/preparing/  O’Bannon website

Mylabschool

We will incorporate this site as well. It has templates for lesson plans and other resources.

Angel website

http://angel.hawkeyecollege.edu/frames.aspx

We will also use a website on Angel as a class resource. I will post some of our handouts here, along with announcements and links to other resources. However, one of the biggest reasons for using Angel is for the discussion board, a place to post links, student samples, and course materials.

Sites for Educators

Teach-nology is another website with lessons plans, tutorials, and resources for teachers

I was excited to get an email message from Jennifer Berry, editor at worksheetlibrary.com.  She gave me permission to link to their site and will include my web page on their directory of links.  Jennifer is a  third grade teacher and tells me the following about their site, which I'd already begun recommending to students earlier this semester.

"Worksheet Library is home to over 5,000 printable K-6 worksheets for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers.  Many of our worksheets are available at no charge.

We also offer a free extensive library of teaching tip articles from our staff."
