Citation BuildersA citation builder is an online tool that helps you to create and format a citation for the Works Cited page. To use them you must first have compiled some information about your source and ideally have it saved in a simple word file so that you can copy and paste. You select the type of resource you have (magazine, online periodical, or web page, for example) and the tool generates a specific form, which you then fill in. You then click on make citation or submit, and your citation appears! Many of these generate MLA and/or APA, and a couple do additional styles. |
The Citation Machine -- Here is the NEW handout (May 2005 UPDATE) with instructions for using the Citation Machine, a web-based citation builder created by David Warlick and posted on the Landmarks for Schools web site for teachers. It creates both APA and MLA style citations, and shows you how to do an internal citation (Post 43) as well.

The NEW home page for the Citation Machine, created by David Warlick. Warning: the Citation Machine has become so popular that the site is very busy and has experienced some downtime due to excessive requests. |
KnightCiteAnother excellent Citation Builder, KnightCite, has just come to my attention! Justin Searls recently emailed me to let me know about the web-based KnightCite tool he created. It does MLA, APA, and Chicago. Check it out! And thanks to Justin for letting me know about this great tool. http://webapps.calvin.edu/knightcite/ To date,
KnightCite has generated 175,785 citations. |
| Mycomplab, a product of Longman, features a wonderful citation builder, AutoCite, in its Research Navigator area of the website. However, this is limited to students using a textbook from the company. |

Looking for an alternative to the Citation
Machine? Here are some suggestions from the librarians at
East Central University
in Ada, Oklahoma. "EasyBib (http://www.easybib.com/) is a web-based program that creates MLA style bibliographies at no cost. APA bibliographies can be created for $5 per year. Since the program is web-based, you can use it from any computer with internet access simply by entering your login name and password. Enter each source and then print the resulting bibliography or have it e-mailed to you. BibBuilder 1.2 (http://www.uwec.edu/jerzdg/orr/articles/research/bib/) creates MLA style bibliographies at no cost. Enter each citation and then cut-and-paste the result into your bibliography. Citation Builder ( http://medlib.med.utah.edu/navigator/module3/citation-tool.htm) formats bibliographies in MLA or APA style at no cost. Enter each citation and then cut-and-paste the result into your bibliography. Somewhat difficult to use." |
