The following is a listing of all of my handouts, PowerPoint presentations and accompanying notes, and other class materials. This webpage is designed to be a supplemental resource for my in-class students; there is a separate, password-protected site for the online class on Angel. In addition, my Face to Face class is using another website through Houghton Mifflin; Eduspace/Writespace uses the Blackboard Platform to enable instructors to design a course website that has the textbook embedded, and provides a discussion board as well as a place to post handouts.

Small groups will work face to face & on Discussion boards on our class website on Eduspace
| This assignment uses an
editorial from USA Today. The editorial concerns the controversy over
the choice of Humvees for the war in Iraq, and points out that there is
a better vehicle for the type of warfare that we are encountering
there--the MRAPs, a mine resistant vehicle used since the 1970s.
The editorial includes a visual of both vehicles and has hyperlinks embedded that take the reader to another article with more information about the use of MRAPs in Iraq. Students discuss the article in small groups and then write their own summary critiques, posting them back to the discussion board for feedback and peer review. |

Individual Summary Critique of an article from Newsweek Magazine, July 2007
| This assignment builds on the practice summary activity. Students read and annotate an article by Fareed Zakaria; they write a summary/critique which they revise and then send off to Smarthinking, an online tutoring service. Based on the suggestions of the tutor, they again revise and then turn in their final version (along with the copy sent back from Smarthinking, so that I can compare the two versions). |
