JOB SUMMARY: Hawkeye Community College’s Faculty Diversity Internship Program is an intensive teaching program that will positively impact classrooms at Hawkeye Community College. The emphasis of the program is on providing underrepresented populations opportunities to explore teaching on a community college campus. Through this exploration and teaching experience we aim to enhance the overall educational experience by creating a staff and faculty that are more reflective of the growing diversity of Hawkeye Community College and our global community. Today, the Hawkeye Community College student population encompasses cultural and ethnic diversity, as well as a diversity in academic preparation, learning styles, and socio-economic backgrounds. These individuals will provide classroom instruction; attend scheduled meetings with Mentor; provide regular feedback to Mentor; maintain grade and attendance records. Maintain necessary academic standards for classroom instruction. These individuals will plan and guide the learning processes for students toward the achievement of curriculum goals and objectives as identified and documented in course outline materials. Other responsibilities include employing instructional methods and materials that are most appropriate for meeting objectives; assessing the accomplishments of students on a regular basis according to department policies and procedures; and providing progress reports (evaluations and grades) as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: Persons who are interested in a career as a community college instructor, have expertise in a subject area, and no community college teaching experience are eligible to participate in the Faculty Diversity Internship Program. For transfer programs, this includes: 1) Graduate students nearing completion of a Master's degree from accredited colleges or universities. 2) Master's degree holders who have not had post-graduate teaching experience. For Career and Technical programs, this includes a Bachelor's degree holders with a minimum of two years of full-time occupational experience in a vocational/technical area. 4) Associate's degree holders with a minimum of six years of full-time occupational experience in a vocational/technical area. Qualifications include the ability to communicate with students and the public. Must be able to apply supervisory skills, motivate students, be personable and professional, have patience with and understanding of students, and be able to learn and apply new concepts and ideas.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Interns will be paid a competitive stipend to assist in one class with a Hawkeye instructor for one semester. Upon completion, individuals who successfully complete the program are encouraged to apply for future opportunities as instructors at the college.
