JOB SUMMARY: This individual develops a public relations strategy to increase awareness of the college brand and college programs/services. Develops compelling stories for media outlets and online channels. Cultivates relationships with key media outlets and key college stakeholders. Responds to information requests from media and the general public. Analyzes and measures results of public relations campaigns and their return on investment. Manages editorial calendars and develops appropriate content. Develops a cross social media strategy to increase awareness of college programs/services. Measures impact of social media on the overall College communication efforts. Experiments with new and alternative ways to leverage social media activities. Examines emerging social media. Assists with the coordination of college special events and other projects: Press Conferences, MLK banquet, Graduation, Open houses, and more. Develops and publishes college publications including newsletters and magazines. Prepares and develops messages for community outreach with electronic newsletters and magazines. Prepares and distributes internal communications with college employees. Updates the department intranet. Assists with the ongoing development of the college website. Develops personal stories of students, alumni, employers, and donors. Develops promotional videos for the college website. Assists with SEO efforts. Assists with photography. General administrative duties. Assists with other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, journalism, communications, or related degree and a minimum of three years relevant experience in a newsroom or public relations/communications or equivalent combination of education and experience. Established relationships with media outlets and social/blog communities. Proven track record in designing and executing public relations campaigns using both traditional media and new media. Strong sense of teamwork and ability to develop and execute campaigns. Excellent written and oral communications skills. Exceptional writing and editing skills – for the various outlets of print, web, social media, blogs, bios, speeches, presentations, video, etc. Strong proofing skills. Event planning experience. Avid consumer of news politics, entertainment, and pop culture. Strong personal interest in higher education, political science, and business issues. Excellent interpersonal skills. Ability to work closely with large and diverse groups. Strong IT skills. Ability to multi-task working under deadlines and pressure. Excellent creativity, imagination, and initiative. Proficient with Microsoft Office programs. Preferences include proficiency with PR applications such as Meltwater.
EMPLOYMENT STATUS: Full time position opening with a comprehensive benefits program including health, dental, life, and LTD insurance; a Section 125 plan for medical and dependent care expense; holiday, personal, sick, and vacation leave; and a choice of retirement programs--IPERS (defined benefit) or TIAA-CREF (defined contribution). Salary will be commensurate with the applicant’s education and experience.
