Satisfactory Academic Progress Policy—SAP
Hawkeye’s Financial Aid Office is required to monitor academic records of all students applying for financial aid. Students must obtain a minimum academic status.
The SAP policy includes, but is not limited to the following financial aid programs:
- Pell grant
- Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant (SEOG)
- Federal/state Work Study
- Iowa Grant
- Vocational-Technology Grant
- Stafford Loan (subsidized and unsubsidized)
- Parent loan for Undergraduate Students
Satisfactory Academic Progress is a Three-Part Federal Regulation to ensure students:
Maintain a cumulative GPA based on the number of credit hours enrolled:
| Credit hours completed | Minimum GPA |
| 1-29 | 1.8 |
| 30 or more | 2.0 |
Successfully complete and earn a passing grade in a minimum of 67% of enrolled credit hours each semester.

For example: Students enrolled in 12 hours are required to complete a minimum of 8 credit hours.
Complete degree within a time frame equal to 150% of their program length.
- Other courses will also be included within this time frame:
- Audit courses
- Credit earned via Institutional Proficiency Exams
- Correspondence
- Independent Study
- College Level Examination Programs
- Transfer credits used as Advanced Standing are included in the total credit hours earned.
For example: AA degree requires 62 credits and a student may earn up to 93 credits to stay within 150% (62 *150% = 93)
Other Academic Progress Guidelines
Grades
Only grades of A, B, C, and D are counted as meeting the required credit/hours. The following do not count as completed credit/hours and may affect Satisfactory Academic Progress:
- Failed classes
- Audited classes
- Withdrawn classes
- Incomplete grades
- No credit/no pass
- Grade requital
