Graduation Speaker – Natalie Brown
Natalie Brown of Cedar Falls had justthe right recipe for turning her childhood dream into a successful business venture.
A birthday gift from her parents at age eight actually helped shape her future. In fact,
the gift – a Kitchen Aid Pro mixer – allowed her to experiment and perfect her awardwinning
Since 2010, Brown has opened two retail stores in four locations in the Cedar Valley
and West Des Moines – including Scratch Cupcakery and Sweet Basil Market. In addition, Brown plans to open a Scratch Cupcakery store in Coralville this summer. When her first
business venture opened three years ago, Brown employed seven people. Today, she has a workforce of nearly 100 employees.
From doing the building demolition work and painting, to hiring the right people, Brown has been involved in every aspect of running her own business. While Brown’s job has transitioned from managing a small bakery to overseeing a team of people who manage the stores, she still spends plenty of time in the kitchen and thinking about her next investment opportunity.
Brown received her Associate in Applied Science degree in Executive Assistant from Hawkeye Community College and
completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Public Policy from Upper Iowa University. Prior to launching her own business, Brown was a graphic designer for Orchard Hill Church in Cedar Falls. She has also been active in her community by serving as a volunteer for the Boys and Girls Club and supporting events including the Sturgis Falls 5K Run and Grant Wheeler Memorial Run.
Brown’s success has been acknowledged by the Waterloo Courier’s “Best of the Best” competition and KCRG Television’s “A-List” awards. Most recently, she was named to the Waterloo Courier’s distinguished list of “20 Under 40” community leaders.
