Bus Driver Short-Term Training

Training Overview

This two-week training program ensures you are fully prepared with the knowledge and skills to safely operate a commercial bus or school bus and you are able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with endorsements. You will receive 80 hours of instruction in a classroom, on driving simulators, and by driving a full-length bus on the driving range and on the road. Topics covered will include basic operations of the bus, safe operating practices, advanced operating practices, vehicle maintenance, and non-vehicle maintenance (e.g. using a fire extinguisher).

Career Opportunities

Upon successful completion, you will have the knowledge and practical skills necessary to qualify for entry-level bus driver positions with school districts, private and local government transit systems, city motor coach companies, tour bus companies, casino transportation, and limousine transportation services.

Admission Requirements

Before beginning this program you must have your bus driving permit, which will allow you to drive on the roadway. To obtain a bus permit you must have successfully passed the written school bus, passenger, air brakes, and general knowledge tests at the department of motor vehicles. You may obtain a book from the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) to study for the written tests. After passing your test at the DOT you will pay $12 (as of February 2016) for your bus driving permit.

Course Information

Start Dates: view class start dates online.

Classes meet: Monday through Friday from 8:00am–2:30pm for two weeks.

Location: Hawkeye's Regional Transportation Training Center.

Cost: $999 – Financial assistance may be available for qualifying individuals.
