Hawkeye Community College to Offer Training for Community Living Professionals

WATERLOO–Hawkeye Community College will hold a new Community Living Professional training April 4-May 9, 2017, at the Martin Luther King Jr. Center, 515 Beech Street, Waterloo. Classes will be Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8:00am-12:00pm.

The class is part of Prepare to Care, a new training program providing career pathways and flexible careers for individuals involved in direct care work. Direct care professionals go by many titles: certified nurse aide, home health aide, personal care attendant, direct support professional, and many more. This valuable segment of the workforce serve in private homes, assisted living and nursing facilities, hospitals, adult day centers, and a variety of settings for people with disabilities.

Community Living Professional is an advanced training certificate that includes Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers certification and four Prepare to Care training modules:

  • Core: Obtain basic knowledge and an introduction to the direct care profession.
  • Home and Community Living: Help individuals enhance or maintain their independence by accessing community supports and services, and achieving personal goals.
  • Instrumental Activities of Daily Living: Learn how to assist individuals with daily living tasks to function independently in a home or community setting.
  • Personal Support: Learn how to provide support to individuals as they perform the personal care activities of daily living.

This training is particularly beneficial for individuals who work with or are interested in working with individuals with autism, cerebral palsy, Down Syndrome, and other developmental disabilities.
